I AM AN IDIOT

Thursday, January 15, 2009

I live in the greater Washington D.C. area. Our local radio stations have been warning us for weeks about the tremendous challenges the area will face during Obama's presidential inauguration. A predicted two million people will attend the ceremonies, most of them do not live in the metropolitan.

Traffic is expected to be horrific and busses can stay in traffic for up to 100 miles. People are expected to be standing still for many many hours. Access to bathrooms will be very limited. Oh, and we have a below freezing temperatures now in D.C.

So, I was sarcastically asking my wife, who is that idiot who will subject himself to all of this just to watch the parade or attend the swearing-in ceremony? This is self-torture. A person who does that is officially insane.

A few days after having this thought, the answer came to me: there are no idiots except for ME. Those people are going to happily endure this torture because they are celebrating a value I have never experienced -- democracy. How dare I to judge them for something I do not even know where I come from?

Those people, whites as well as blacks, are celebrating the political freedom environment the country gives them.  The African-American community is celebrating a major achievement after decades of political marginalization.

To every single one from the two million visitors, you are most welcome to D.C. metro. and please accept my apologies. I am THE IDIOT.

Mr Wael

you are more than just that

sorry for saying it but you are witnessing a peace of history in the making less than 40 years of the civil rights act in the USA an African American (Black) is elected to the highest office in the land as they say.

His father would not have been allowed in most of the public places that the son will now technically will rule.

I might not agree with a lot of the slogans they say about America but nothing points more to the slogan "land of opportunity" than electing Barak Hussien Obama to be the 44th president of the USA. Although I some time comfort myself by saying after GW they would have elected anyone from the democrats to the office because they don't want to see a republican there for a long time to come.

Amgad

PS what do you mean you did not experience democracy before. We have democracy where we come from and to prove it, the 2nd runner up in our FIRST presidential election is in jail my friend. when will McCain go there
