Reflections on the Elections

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Witnessing unfolding history had profound impact on me. It was an inspiration to all HUMANTY that always "YES WE CAN". I felt proud and I needed to reflect. Here I go.
  • Political freedom is not a gift you receive, it is a right you earn
  • If you have a political agenda, the only way to have a chance to put it to execution is to get involved in the political process
  • If you stay isolated claiming you have all the solutions to all world's problems and waiting for the world to come begging for these solutions, keep waiting you idiot.
  • Our Muslim clerics who forbid involvement in the political life should rethink their views, not twice, but 100 times. If they do not change their views, well, have a life and give us a break
  • Those clerics should feel really bad about how much they hindered us, the Muslims, in showing the world how great Islam is, that Islam has solutions to the world problems and that Islam provides the missing moderate views on "the issues"

Salamo 3leykom Wael,

I think it's very early to draw conclusions from the outcome of the elections. However, I totally agree with u that we should not wait in the dark room forever.

Any way -- happy to be the first commenter :)

Congratulations for the blog and wish that we all benefit from it, by being closer to each other, and (most importantly) to ALLAH.

Bism ellah..

This election is a historic mark with profound impacts, not just on the US but the whole world. We are witnessing major changes in ideologies, concepts and needs. For a long time the world has not witnessed such a dramatic change in thought.

Whether the change is positive, negative or passive is too early to determine. What impact will this change in leadership have on average Americans, Africans, Africa, Muslims, corporations and external affairs is still to early. We should not however expect any major shifts... but it is definitely interesting to witness.

Isolation is never a solution to any problem... its all about dawaa... thats what we should be focused on... just like our beloved Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).. part of dawaa is working the system without getting tainted from its impurities, but filtering it as much as possible..

Wael, change that dark background man... make it more cheerful.. wasalam

Wael,

Congrats for the blog, and nice name btw. Hope you will keep up to the "UNEDITED" promise :)

I just have two reflections on the election night:

First, I find it sad that many Arabs and Muslims are misguided by the election of Obama. I felt happy yesterday that a black man is finally a president to the most powerful nation in the world. This has huge sentimental value. And it resonates well with all people who had to endure any sort of discrimination. It also shows that the American people are after all not-that-thick. Well, it took them 2 elections to realize something was wrong, but at least they finally saw the light.

But, Obama is an American president. He will be successful if he did well FOR AMERICA. Not for Palestine, the Arabs, the Kenians, nor the Muslims. I can make a solid prediction that he will NOT deliver on any of these territories. And if he did, it will be to server a bigger purpose for the US. We shouldn't blame him for that. People who are cheering Obama's win in the Middle East are up for a big disappointment in my opinion.

That said, it still felt good when I woke up this morning, knowing that Obama has won this race.

Second, I was flipping channels between CNN and Nile TV, just to see the response of the Egyptians to how the election day was unfolding. And man, I laughed till I cried. In a country where people find it OK for a vote result to be 99.9%, it is even beyond pathetic to give any criticism to how democracy is practiced in any other country. Yet, they were criticizing left and right.

And btw, if you offer a sample of 1 mil people a 1000 dollars each no strings attached, I am sure more than 0.01% will refuse to take it. You cannot just get 1 million people to agree on anythihng, even free money!

I wish people in Egypt and in other similar countries (wink, wink) will wake up to how miserably they are being led. They are not at the luxury of even criticizing the democratic process in other countries! I know this is tough to swallow, and I will get flamed soon for that :) but it is true.

One sad soul wrote an article yesterday about how the electoral vote system is originally an Islamic concept! And that the electors are "Ahl Al-7all wa Al-3aqd", and that laymen shouldn't be allowed to have a direct vote, but it rather has to go thru the "filter" of the elites!

What can I say, this reminds me of the new business of Scientific miracles in Quran. We wait until there is a new big invention or theory that appeals to us, find a verse in Quran that can remotely be interpreted anything close to the big new idea, and voila! It is the same sad scenario here. If the Islamic system is better than what the US has today for an election system (which I know it is for a fact), why for God's sake aren't Islamic countries using it?! It is a simple question that the idiots we sometimes call "thinkers" or "clerics" dare not even try to answer. Yet they still use the rotten-old "Kont Ha-Olha" childish trick. Guys we are down lower beyond we can imagine. And the first step is to recognize how bad and miserable the situation of our nation is. Then, we might have a shot at fixing it.

A glorious day for sure. I hope it will trigger us to think deep and hard, and to make a change.

Assalamu Alikum Wael,

Nice thoughts. I think, however, that he (or any American president for that matter) will NOT do much for Arabs and Muslims. We have to do our hard work first.
